Increase state gasoline tax by one dollar per gallon. This will raise over two billion dollars per year -- even if consumption goes down a bit. We were paying over $4.00 a gallon two years ago, and we are around $3.00 per gallon today -- so we can afford it! This will also reduce air pollution, traffic congestion, and slow down global warming.
Increase salaries for elected officials. If we pay higher salaries for our governor, state legislature, and other elected officials, we will get better people to serve in these positions. We only pay our governor $166,891, but school superintendents in many districts make a lot more than that. The sales tax should be extended to medical and health care services. This is nearly 20% of our economy, and most people in the health care sector are already overpaid. Putting sales tax on these services should raise at least one billion dollars a year, and balance the state budget.
Maximum prison sentence of 20 years, and "good time" release after only one-third of sentence served. We spend too much money on life sentences, especially with the "three strikes law". Elderly prisoners cost too much money to maintain. This idea will save hundreds of millions per year in the long-term and stop the need to build new prisons.
Increase state sales tax by one percent, so we can pay for welfare programs, and for state employee's pay raises health care benefits. We have the best state services in the country, and we should be willing to pay to keep them!
